Trends: Are Black women back from the dead?

I’m not big into rap or hip-hop, so the last few years seemed like an entertainment and inspiration desert when it comes to seeing empowered black women just being excellent and special without screaming curse-words or whatever. That annoys me.

It alsofelt like there was a lot of negativity surrounding those of us with darker skin, and I was starting to think that people just couldn’t give up on the idea that being dare with full lips and natural hair was an actual state of being that didn’t require apology.

Then the waters started parting…5 serenaSerena Williams was a badass April cover girl and that just seemed to inspire her and she went on to win a bunch of tournaments. You know, like Wimbledon and whatnot. After she was rested up from that she was just everywhere, including the Harper’s Bazaar Women Who Dare  issue and the upcoming Pirelli calendar.

I really should have taken tennis more seriously in high school…

1 nina simoneIn June one of the most revolutionary black entertainers in the world was honored with a documentary. What Happened Miss Simone? came out and her name was on everyone’s lips again. Sad, because after a revival in the 90s her incredible voice had sunk into obscurity.

2 grace at afropunkI thought that I would have to content myself with that, but then Grace Jones played Afro Punk! I found out too late to get tickets, but whatever. She was there!!! he inspiration of so many crazy-dressing black girls was actually up to her usual tricks, being her amazing and provoking self and it was awesome to have my twitter taken over by …GRACE.

And then she put out a book, I’ll Never Write My Memoirs, and then freed the nipple at a New York book signing.

I mean, could anything else happen?
4 fashion month Just Fashion month, no biggie. While some people were moaning and whining over 20% non-white models on the runways, I was too busy cheering. I mean- Herieth Paul, Tami Williams, Grace Bol and that gorgeous big afro girl who starred in the under-reported Stella McCartney One City One Girl series. Nana Ghana wore Stella McCartney in her own individualistic way and for all those people saying there’s no diversity, I just really didn’t see a lot of people covering this.  3 ajak deng at phillipe plein One of my fave instagram models, Ajak Deng killed it to death in the Phillipe Plein show. Which brought everything back to punk, Grace and all that’s good in the world. 6 viola At this point the world was just bursting with black lady goodness but then? Viola Davis won the Emmy for leading actress in a drama. As Analiese Keating, a high-powered lawyer and law professor, Davis shows such a kaleidoscope of feeling that her just raising her eyes to stare into the camera can blow you away. The character calls for a real, raw earthy (yet touchingly elegant) performance and Viola Davis has brought it with every episode.

Then she gave this speech and everybody was like- yeah! And then she also won wearing her hair in it’s naturally textured state and her dress was gorgeous, so it was like amazing black lady heaven. 7 lupita

And then,my October Vogue came and Lupita Nyong’o was on the cover looking crazy gorgeous and at that moment you could be like, ok this was a good year to be a black woman- but then the Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot photos were just… there were so many!!!! I mean a LOT! It wasn’t just fashion, it was grace, beauty, mystery, and romance.

Then she turned out to be starring in a play written by other gorgeous black lady Danai Gurira for Walking Dead at the Public Theater. Can you be any more proactive about bringing diversity to the stage? AND THEN it’s just been announced that the play, Eclipsed, is moving to Broadway.

If anything else happens, I’m just gonna faint.

Newsbreak: Aveda storms pre-fall, NYFW and PFW with distinctive hair and makeup for Stella Mccartney, Costello Tagliapietra and Haider Ackermann

All of the fashion weeks will be over soon (and we’ll be talking about ss2015 in a little bit) but one beauty brand manages to straddle the entire show schedule behind-the-scenes with key designers. From minimal posh prep to high-concept punk Aveda managed to give beauty realness time after time.

Pre-fall with Stella McCartney:

For Stella McCartney, rock and fashion royalty, Aveda’s beauty team created luxe ponytails that looked effortless with the posh preppy clothing. Using three products and some heat, hair was crafted into waves and then bound for a sleek yet disheveled look.

How can you do this at home? Just like this:

Step 1: After prepping hair with a shampoo and conditioner like Pure Abundance, mist towel-dried hair with Pure Abundance Style Prep in small sections.

Step 2: With a fine-tooth comb, blow dry hair back and away from the face.

Step 3: Taking top sections of the hair, clip hair to the sides to focus attention to the under layers of hair. With a 1” curling iron, loosely curl the under layers of hair, half way to the head. Pull and twist curls to create natural looking waves and set with a light mist of Air Control Hair Spray.

Step 4: Gather hair in a loose ponytail at the nape and secure tight with an elastic that matches the hair.

Step 5: With five drops of Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil  emulsified in palms of the hand, gently muss up the ends of the pony-tail and top of the hair for a naturally messy appearance that shows the dimension of the hair’s shine.

Step 6: Set the final look with Air Control Hair Spray.

Check out what Vogue had to say about the collection here.

NYFW with Costello Tagliapietra:

Next, Aveda was off to create makeup that quietly spoke volumes. This look is almost noth there, and is perfect for an array of skin tones. A warm neutral palette and lightly tinted lips leaves room for beauty to shine through.

You can definitely feel safe trying this at home:

Face: On freshly washed and dried skin, apply Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Tinted Moisture Broad Spectrum with SPF 15.

Apply Inner Light™ Concealer where needed; set with Inner Light™ Mineral Loose Powder.

Eyes: Apply Petal Essence™ Single Eye Color in Moon from lash line to crease of the lid. In the inner contour of the eye, apply the medium color in the Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in Gobie Sands.

On the upper and lower line of the lashes, a third of the way to the outer edge of the eyes, apply Petal Essence™ Eye Definer in Black Orchid; smudge with an eye shadow applicator.

Groom brows by brushing up and over, and then set with Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in Gobi Sands. Apply Mosscara™ in Earth on the upper and lower lashes.

Cheeks: Contour cheeks with Petal Essence™ Face Accents in Tesserae.

Lips: Pre-mix Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Pink Hibiscus and Fire Poppy on the back of the hand, then dab lightly to the lips with an eye shadow applicator.

Lovely! And click here to see how Costello Tagliapietra handled NYFW like bosses.

PFW with Haider Ackermann:

Continent hopping Aveda was soon off to Paris to transform models from ordinaly girls to thread wrapped high-priestesses of punk for the runway. A mshup of paste and thread, these hairstyles are not for the faint of heart…

Follow these directions, and you’ll be walking the concrete runway with pro hair in no time:

Step 1: Set a styling foundation by misting Pure Abundance Style-Prep throughout the hair.

Step 2: Taking a generous amount of Phomollient™ Styling Foam in hands, warm up the product in palms and then distribute throughout the hair, being sure to cover each strand.

Step 3: Blow dry hair using the hands to help add volume and texture.

Step 4: Let hair lie with no visible part and mold around face; begin to add dimension with a crimping iron by clamping small sections of hair 2-3 inches apart throughout the head.

Step 5: Start crafting a punk style with the hands and intermittently using Air Control Hair Spray to hold the created shapes.

Step 6: Once the shape is achieved, take small sections of hair on the right side and weave strands with thread going upwards creating haphazard braid-like patterns; repeat on the other side.

Step 7: Set the look with a final spritz of Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.
