Earth Day, the hippie celebration of nature that started in 1970 is going strong in 2015 as we all examine the ways in which we can live peacefully on the planet that we share. Aveda, a company that has long espoused an affinity for natural ingredients and spiritual centeredness, has launched the Light the Way™ soy candle to raise money to protect clean water in areas that desperately need it. 100% of money made from the candle’s sale is donated to the Global Greengrants Fund.
Since 2006, Aveda has raised $9 million through sales of its Light The Way™ candle. Since 1999, thanks to the passion of the Aveda Network and its guests, the brand has raised more than $38 million to help support organizations that directly affect environmental change. More than $32 million has supported clean water projects at home and around the world.
Of course- the Light the Way™ candle is manufactured in such a way as to reduce waste. Candles are housed in 100% reclaimed glass beverage bottles and the outer cartons are fabricated from 90% post-consumer recycled (PCR) paperboard, with a portion made from Aveda make-ready materials (sheets of scrap paper that would normally go into the recycling stream). Each candle is made from 100% naturally-derived soy and plant waxes, scented with a new pure flower and plant aroma made with 100% certified organic essential oils, including certified organic vanilla, cinnamon and ylang ylang from Madagascar.
Aveda joins organizations like The Voss Foundation to bring attention to everyone’s need and right to clean water. Their mission is to find as many new sources of water as possible in sub-saharan Africa, thus giving the women and children of the region the tools necessary to make life more livable. Their One Well At A Time initiative have implemented 7 water access points and 285 VIP latrines in the KaNdinda and Egebeni Chiefdoms of this small kingdom in southern Africa.
How can you make a difference? Here’s a checklist of ways that you, in your own home, can help to save the water that we need to survive:
Happy Earth Day!
