Ok, so we’re a little scrambled up around here due to NYFW and everything? BUT I had to tell you about this right away. I got invited to the launch of Tommy Bahama’s fragrance Island Life, and since it was such a fun winter break for me…well, I had to take a break from our NYC winter to get you in the summer mood, too.
Mai Tais all around!
First off, remember that shopping event I had earlier this month at Intimacy? Well, as an Intimacy insider I earned a little ching ching that night! I made enough to purchase my heart’s desire- the Andora 3D molded bra from Simone Perele ($89). It’s pretty, but practicel. It offers immoveable support so that you’re not bouncing around all day damaging delicate breast tissue and making them sag. I love it so much. It’s the first really good bra that I’ve ever owned.
Once I had my super perfect bra on and everything was hoisted up into the right places, I was ready to get those winter layers on in order to venture out into the Arctic winds of Brooklyn to go to th Island Life Oasis event. Over my grey BDG tshirt (which I bough on sale in 2012) I wore my fave graphic Kensie Clothing sweater and some random black leggings with my calf-warming Corinne boots from Cat Footwear ($210).
Then I layered my new Desigual Winnie scarf ($39) with a $5 print street table scarf and a peachybuff colored nylon scarf from REPurposingNOLA ($20) to make sure no stray breezes gave me a sore throat. My mom would be proud. I threw on my ever-present LL Bean Freeport field jacket ($59.99) under my fave thirift store grey velvet overcoat. I threw all my neccessaries in my Snake Charmer hobo bag from Kensie Clothing ($66) and headed out.
Once I made it to Manhattan, it was a short walk to warmth and rumbased drinks. While I actually gave up sugar and bread for Lent, I decided that I was gonna eat and drink whatever they had and just try to do better the next day.
It’s winter and I refuse to be a party pooper.
Anyway- Those Mai Tais were as delicious as they look, featuring gorgeous edible flowers and they were handed to us by cute male bartenders in Tommy Bahama checked shirts who like to flirt. Sigh, I was warmer already.
The beach theme was reinforced by sand sculptures created by Matt Long of Can You Dig It. In true Tommy Bahama style (life is one long weekend, so relax), Matt is a professional sandman who has won awards for his work and has been on The Today Show and was featured in O Magazine. For this event, he creted giant sandy versions of the Island Life fragrance botttles in front of a summery backdrop of surf-worthy waves. More bottles of the fragrance were scattered throughout the sand pit.
After surveying Matt’s work (while drinking a Mai Tai at top speed) I was introduced to the SurfSet Fitness paddleboard setup. Everyone who attended was invited to gettheir surf on with a professional instructor. Being super nosy, I asked tons of questions while wobbling my way through my first ever surfing session (no water? no problem!). Our instructor Aaron Throuvenin actually played pro basketball in Australia and had some injuries that prevented him from playing. He and his wife were avid surfers, and they were able to turn that passion into their brand ambassadorship at SurfSet here in New York.
The Island Life fragrance for women is everything you could wish for. It has a citrusy freshness that dries down into a warm sensual scent that leaves you sniffing your wrist over and over again. Designed by perfumers Frank Voelkl and Ilias Ermenidis who were inspired by ‘the mystery and adventure of the island getaway’. The Island Life for men is a blend of bergamot and tarragon top notes and soft cedarwood will make you lean all the way in if he wears it. It smells that deliciously sexy in such a subtle way.
I have literally been spraying Island Life for her on my wrist and neck every morning and before bed every night since the event.
I’ve also been wearing these Easy Wave water shoes ($9.95) that were provided for paddleboard students at the event. Well, they were in a basket and I liked them so I just bogarted them to cover the hole in my favorite sock (ok, I have had that pair of socks since 2007, and they come up over my boots) and was immediately seduced. So comfortable! I’ve been wearing them around the house and can’t wait to put them into my style rotation for Spring and Summer.
Island Life for her is avaliable as a (deliciously scented) eau de toilette spray. The 3.4 ounce size is $78. Don’t mess with little bottles, just get the big one. You won’t be sorry. The bottle is beautiful and features a gorgeously textured beaten faux gold cap.
Island Life for him is $70 for a 3.4 ounce bottle of sculpted glass with woveb rattan elements in the cap and label. A masculine square shape that will sit comfortably on the dresser, where it will show off your amazing taste in fragrance.
